Maya Mist Ribbon Strip Flower

This tutorial shows you how to create simple flower embellishments that are perfect to accent any project.

Supplies Needed:
Cotton Fabric or Ribbon
Maya Mist (Blue, Iridescent Pearl)
3 - Maya Road Trinket Buttons (Rain)
Embroidery Floss
6 - Seed Beads

Tools Needed:
Pinking Shears
Sewing Needle
Paper Towels or Newspaper
Shoebox

Instructions:

• Using Pinking Shears but 4 strips of cotton fabric or ribbon to approximately .5" x 3" and 4 strips additional strips to approximately .25" x 2"
• Line either your kitchen sink with paper towels or a shoebox  with newspaper, place your fabric or ribbon strips onto the paper towels or newspaper and spray with the Blue Maya Mist, continue to spray until the desired depth of color is achieved, let dry a bit then spray with the Iridescent Pearl Maya Mist, let dry
• Arrange the larger strips and smaller strips to create the flower as shown, next place the smaller flower on top of the larger stack as shown

• Arrange three Maya Road Trinket Buttons onto the flower center, thread a sewing needle with three strands of embroidery floss, attach a button then bring the sewing needle up through the button hole once again and place a seed bead onto the sewing needle, now take the needle and go back down into the same hole to secure your seed beads as shown

You can create several flowers in different colors then attach a pin back to your flower and place it onto a bag or sew one or several to a headband. There are so many possibilities.

Sheer Calendar Set... magnetic version

In an attempt to keep our family organised, we purchased a few magnetic notice boards which we have mounted on the wall near our telephone.

One of these magnetic boards has a blank month grid printed on it. We've been writing in the months and dates for a few months now, but I decided it was time to simplify the system by making some magnetic numbers to place on our board.

Enter the Maya Road Sheer Calendar Set...

Here's the 'how to':

• The numbers in the sheer calendar set are 1" in diametre, perfect for mounting onto a cardboard circle punched with a 1" circle punch. Start by punching 31 x 1" circles from cardstock.

• Use vellum tape to glue the numbers to the cardstock circles. In this step you are mounting the cardstock under the sheer number circle, so the colour comes through. This also gives you a base to glue a magnet under the number.... in the next step.

• Use a hot glue gun to glue the magnet to the under side of the number.

• And you're finished!

• If you would like to includethe months your magnetic calendar, repeat the above process. I used a scalloped oval punch as the base of the sheer month pieces. Then add the magnet to the back.

 

And this is the finished set...

Here's my calendar all set up. I'm hoping it might keep us a bit more organised now!

Our newest Design Team Member - Dina Wakley! We have been following Dina's work for quite a while and loved her unique style. We can't wait to show you what she does with our Maya Road products!

Here is a little about Dina in her own words:

I am Dina Wakley, and I live with my husband and 3 sons in the desert of Glendale, AZ. I didn't grow up here, though...I grew up in Michigan, Ohio, and England. I come from a very creative, artistic family--my parents and siblings are musical, artistic, and talented. I started scrapping in 1995, back when all the supplies that existed were stickers and black pens. I've taken a few detours over the years into stamping and bookbinding, but I always come back to my first love, scrapping. I do mixed-media art and visual journaling, and my deep love for paint and ink very often spills over into my scrapbook pages. I love to cook good food, hang out with good friends, find a good bargain, and read good books. I am a docent (i.e. tour guide) at the Phoenix Art Museum, so if you are ever in town let me know and I'll give you a tour. I adore Maya Road and am so excited to work with their cutting-edge products!

And we wanted to share with you a peek at a Maya Road project that she has already been creating!

Coaster Cards

Okay, I have a confession. I love to hoard Maya Road's coaster books. These books come in so many adorable palm-sized shapes, I'm sure that everyone has their favorite. For me, I love them all! Plus their very affordable price points make them even more attractive to hoard! ;)

This time round, I'm going to share some small projects where I used a few of my favorite coaster books not as albums but on cards. These are easy to do and so-very cute!

On this card below, I used a page from the Bird Chipboard Coaster Book, covered it in patterned paper and embellished with a paper leaf, Suede Stitched Blossom, Marigold Trinkets Ribbon, Vintage Pearl and Clear Jewels trinket pins. Sentiment is Noah Mini alphabets misted with Turquoise Metallic Mist.

I shrieked a happy laugh when I first saw the Coffee Cup Coaster! One of my favorite ways to embellish this book is adhering chipboard swirls at the top of the book to create 'steam'. For the next card, I did just that. After covering a page with patterned paper, I layered a piece of Clock Sheer under the sentiment. Sentiment is Jonathan Mini and Noah Mini chipboard alphabets. A ribbon bow embellished with Clear Jewel trinket pins was the final touch for this card.

Another one of my favorites is the Butterfly Coaster. For this card, I matted the butterfly page with a contrasting patterned paper and embellished with a paper leaf, Velvet Pleat blossom, Velvet Stitched blossom and Double-stitched ribbon with Leaf trinket pin. Pearl strands were used for the butterfly's antenna. Sentiment is Jonathan Mini alphabets, misted with Gold Metallic Mist.

So try using your favorite Maya Road coaster books on your next card-making project! They'll up that 'oomph' factor in your cards, for sure!

Maya Road albums and fabric....

 

I L-O-V-E Maya Road albums it's that simple. I have painted them, covered them with paper, and today I am going to show you how to cover them with your favorite fabric!

Supplies I used: Maya Road landscape binder (any Maya Road chipboard or sheer album will work), fabric, Maya Road David chipboard letters, old patterns, buttons, spools, and bobbins, Maya Road pearl pins, DMC floss. Adhesive: Fabri-Tac by Beacon (thanks to the fabulous Katie Watson for turning me on to this miracle in the adhesive world!)

First remove all the pages from your album. Next, lay your album flat onto the fabric and cut 1/2-3/4 inch excess around the edge of the album. Mark the middle of your fabric, apply adhesive to the spine of the album and place on the center line you marked.

 

Now starting on one side adhere the edges of the fabric to the inside of the album cover. I used clothes pins to hold the fabric until it had taken its hold. Continue all the around the album with this method remembering to pull tightly from the opposite site that is glued down so you get a tight and even look.

 

Using a separate piece of chipboard cut this a little smaller than the inside of the album's cover, continue to cover it the same way you covered the album. I used a different fabric for this!

 

Once your album is completely covered, measure a piece of ribbon as long as your album and with enough length to tie the album together. I placed this ribbon onto the inside of the cover and secured it with tape.

 

Add your smaller pieces that you covered and adhere them over the ribbon and the inside covers. This will hide any imperfections and just gives the album a more finished look!

 

Your album is done!! Now it is time to add your Maya Road (pearl pins, etc.) and other fun embellishments! I wound DMC floss around Maya Road chipboard letters and then finished them with Glossy Accents. I also used a piece of fabric and threaded three old spools onto the spine of my album. On the inside of the album I used Modge Podge and old patterns to cover my album pages.To see a wonderful tutorial on how to make a flower from old patterns please visit fellow Maya Road DT member Lisa Pace here! I hope this inspires you to try adding fabric to your next Maya Road project.

 

 

 

Here's another idea: Use fabric from something that has real meaning to you or someone else (a wedding dress, prom dress, pajamas, jeans, quilt, etc.) Here is an example of an album I made using a dress worn at a wedding! a home decor project

I'm currently re-decorating my daughter's bedroom. She has outgrown the younger style of decor and she's chosen a pink/beige/brown colour scheme. She needed a new bedside light to match her colour scheme, so I purchased an IKEA lamp and shade with the idea that we'd decorate this together. Emily, my daughter, picked out her favourite Maya Road trinkets she wanted on her lampshade. I've used my hot glue gun to glue the rick rack and trinkets flowers to the lampshade.

Here's the finished product:

 

The rick rack was glued around the top and bottom edges of the lampshade:

 

The flowers were then glued to the front of the lampshade:

Supplies/materials:

• Maya Road suede stitched blossoms, pink and cream;
• Maya Road light pink scallop ric rac (one of my favourite Maya Road trims);
• IKEA lampshade;
• Hot glue gun.

~Home Sweet Home~ A Story waiting to be told...

 So yes, I am still on my vintage milk cap kick...I can't seem to get off of it!  So, going off of the houses that I made before, I translated the theme to the house binder album. 

  The inside is not completed because we are right in the middle of buying a new house!  This will be filled with photos and thoughts about our new house.  So for now, the inside is covered in paper and waiting for it's story to be added.

 

  I used the Maya Road House Binder.  I also used the Maya Road Journal tag rubons on the door, the scroll III rubons above the door, star microchips and a Maya Road sheer ticket in brown and cream.  I added an antique key (thanks Wendy, the giver of all antique cool pieces!) to the bow to accent the theme. 

 

 

 

I can't wait to finish this album so keep your fingers crossed for me that we close escrow with no problems!!

Cards for Mom

My mom will know I think she is something special after she sees all the mini velvet flowers I put on her card. I serioulsly love these mini flowers and want to save them all for myself. They are just so darn cute!

Spring Banner

To make my Spring Banner I used a Mini 2-Ring Triangle Banner Book.

To give the chipboard triangles a *tin* look I first ran each piece though a Cuttlebug embossing folder.  I then applied a layer of black paint.  Once dry I added a layer of metallic blue paint.

Once that was dry I gently sanded the top layer to expose a little of the black paint.

To make the letters I first applied a thick layer of white glue and added lots of white glitter.  Once that was dry I sealed all the glitter on with Glossy Accents.

In honour of NSD I made a card for you all.

To create this card I used the following products:

1.     Scroll Frame Classic Chipboard Book

2.    Birds of a Feather chipboard

3.    Owls Mini Sheer set

4.    Scallop Frame Chipboard Set

5.    Jonathan mini alphabet

6.    Felt Beaded Trinket Flowers

7.    Velvet Blossoms Fire

8.    Scraps of patterned paper

9.    Blue, brown and pink ink

10.    Glossy accent

11.    Bling for eyes

12.    Jonathan Rubons

Firstly cover the scroll chipboard with white textured cardstock, sand and ink edges.

Use scraps of patterned paper and sticth them together on an angle with sewing machine and adhere to page.

Cover scallop frame chipboard with patterned paper and sand edges. Adhere to frame in top right corner

 

Layer the flowers and attach with strong adhesive.

Ink branch and letters, once dry apply glossy accent. Attach once dry.

Use mounting tape to attach the owl (I placed 2 small dots behind the bling eyes, so the owl was raised)

Apply rub ons as per above picture.
