Queen For A Day

Hi Roadies! Today I want to share a project I made a while ago with my mom in mind.  My mother suffers from Alzheimer's and buying her a gift she can appreciate, can be difficult.  One thing she hasn't lost however, is her sweet tooth! So I'm planning on making her a cake with a crown motif to go along with this project for Mother's Day.

The sign was created using the new Royal Crown Coaster and a few pages from the Pennant Chipboard Album.

In the close up above you can see that I layered the pages of the crown album together before covering it with patterned paper.  To achieve the puffy section at the top of the crown, I applied Mod Podge to the back of the patterned paper then pushed it into place with my fingers.  The rest of the crown was embellished with a chipboard border, some glitter and painted trinket bead.

To give the sign a nice finished look, I stitched some Zipper Trim around the edges, added some pom-poms and a couple more trinket beads.

Home Album by Dina

My dad got a job with Dow Chemical after he graduated from college. Dow moved us around every 3 to 5 years, so I have lived in many places and in many houses. When I saw the Maya Road Home album, I knew I wanted to create a record of some of the many places I lived.

I did the album in typical "Dina" style with messy paint, mist, and untrimmed sewing threads. It's a fun little record of the places I've called home.

21 Years Later - Miracles Happen

In 2008, I started an art site called creative therapy with several artists who inspire me. Since then, we've regularly had catalysts (prompts) to encourage us and others to create art of any medium. To date, I've done 130 pieces of art for the site. Some were mixed media, others were digital and a few were layouts. This year, I've been focusing mostly on doing scrapbook layouts for my catalysts. 

This month's catalyst is: Tell us about a favorite or special piece of clothing.

Here's my layout: 

Journaling Reads:

I have saved this pair of jeans for 21 years. They traveled with me from Turkey to Pittsburgh to New York to San Diego and to the Bay Area. People told me to throw them out several times. “You can never fit the jeans you wore at 17.” I heard again and again. But I couldn’t bear to give up. And now that I am finally losing all this weight, I can finally fit into them once again (they don’t close just yet but still.) miracles do happen.

 

If you look closely, you will see that except for some of the letters and the cardstock, this layout only has Maya Road products and it has no patterned paper, at all. I love using Maya Road products differently than their "intended use." In this example, I cut off the top of the kraft envelope and stuck my photo inside it. I also snuck in some of the zipper trim on both sides of my envelope for some texture.

I then took the top of the envelope and used it on the edge of my layout to make a little reminder to myself (to never ever give up!)

And, finally, I am a huge fan of the microchips and the microfelt; I find that they are a quick and great way to add small splashes of color and interest to little corners of my page. I love the different colors and shapes and use mine all the time.

Counting Bus

This is a project that I made for CHAW 2011. I used lots of different products in this project and below are just a few for you:

 

 

Products used are: Bus Chipboard Album, Philadephia Chipboard Numbers, William Mini Chipboard Alphabet, Zipper trim White, Motifs Chipboard, Foundation Chipboard, Supernova Chipboard, Classic Label Coaster Album, Modern Label Coaster Album, Maya Mists in assorted colors and papers are by Echo park. I know there are other Items I have used but not listed...

I guess the idea of this sort of book could be a great way to get rid of lots of left over items you may have around your craft room. Here are the counting pages for you all:

Out & About Banner

Good Morning Roadies! Today I have a fun banner project using a variety of Maya Road goodies. Perfect for Spring & Summer Decor!

I started with the base of this banner using a Chipboard banner to back the canvas pieces.  I like my banners to be a little more on the stiff side and that worked like a charm.  I then punched out some circles and layered them on the canvas.  Using Maya Mist I sprayed a few layers to create my polka dots.

Next I layered up die-cut pieces, shapes I cut and chipboard scallop frames.

for a fun added touch I used trinket pins to create my "banners"

Vintage Style Portrait Charm

I love the Portrait Stamp Set as the images remind me of the charms that are on my grandmother's charm bracelet. She has every grandchild and great grandchild represented and I can remember always looking at it trying to find my charm. I thought it would be fun to make charms of my daughters to put on a long necklace made from a piece of silver ball chain. I really like how vintage looking they turned out and plan on making more as gifts for friends.

Supplies Needed: Foundation Chipboard Set, Portrait Stamp Set, Acrylic Block, Vintage Ledger Paper, Black Eyelet, Jump Ring, Glue Stick, Black Archival and Creamy Brown Ink, Glossy Accents

Tools Used: Craft Knife, Craft Matt, Sanding Block, Crop-a-Dile, Pliers

Instructions:

1. Apply glue stick adhesive to the front of an oval foundation piece and cover with vintage ledger paper.
2. Cut around the foundation piece using a craft knife to remove excess ledger paper, then sand the edges. Repeat this step on the back of the foundation piece as well.
3. Apply black archival ink to the oval scallop stamp found in the Portrait Stamp Set and stamp the image onto the front of the altered oval foundation piece.
4. Apply black archival ink to the image of either the girl, boy, mom or dad and stamp in the center of the scalloped stamped image.
5. Apply black archival ink to the sides of the foundation chipboard piece.
6. Apply creamy brown ink to the edges of the ledger paper and on top of the paper until you get the aged look you want.
7. Type the persons name onto an old black book margin, ink the edges using black archival ink and the top using creamy brown ink. Apply a glue stick type adhesive to the back and attach it just below the stamped portrait.
8. Using a crop-a-dile punch a hole at the top of the foundation piece.
9. Apply glossy accents to the inner edge all the way around the oval, then fill in the entire oval. Set aside to let dry. (if you want a thick layer of glossy accents make sure you let it dry in between applications.) I only have one application on mine.
10. Once the glossy accents is dry set an eyelet into the hole at the top. Attach a jump ring and string onto a ball chain necklace. I accented mine with a charm I created using old shell and rhinestone buttons.

 I hope you give this a try. If you don't want to put yours on a necklace they would make great accents for tags, cards, mini albums, layouts and altered projects. You can't go wrong with this embellishment.

Altered Cupcakes

These adorable little cupcakes start with a love of the Cream Organza Rose Ribbon.  I could have yards & yards of this ribbon.  I want to make a skirt out of it.  So i got to thinking of other projects i could altered and came up with these cute little cupcakes. 

Supplies:

• Maya Road Cream Organza Rose Ribbon
• Maya Road Mini Wooden Spools
• Maya Road Antique Gem Trinket Pins
• Maya Road Banner Singleton Stamp
• Maya Road Pomegrante Pink Mist
• 10" x 2.5" Patterned Paper
• scoring tool
• 1.5" circle punch of cardstock
• strong liquid glue
• cotton batting
• Needle & thread

Score a .5" down the length patterned paper then turn the paper and score every .25".  This will create the folds in the cupcake base.  Fold the top .5" over and then pleate the paper. 

 
Glue the end pieces together to create a circle of pleates.  Next add lots of strong liquid glue to the circle and place the bottom of the pleated circle onto the punched circle push the top out slightly to create the slanted cupcake liner. 

It will look like this.  You want to make sure the bottom of the pleated circle is on the outer edge of the punched circle.  Let the liner dry and work on the top.

Using just two organza roses from the ribbon, fold the two pieces together and stitch the top & side pieces creating a pocket.  This will become the top of the cupcake.  *Tip: If you want "sprinkles on your cupcake, stitch beads onto the outside of the trim.  Next stuff the pocket with cotton batting. 

Spritz the wooden spool with Maya Mists & let dry.  I used Pomegrante Pink for my spool.  Take a tiny strip of cardstock and stamp title/saying and wrap around the spool.  Using your favorite trinket pen, stick spool & saying into the top of the cupcake. 

You can fill the liner with a special treat or just with the cotton batting.  The possibilites are endless.

I had so much fun with these little altered cupcakes.  I see so many possibilities with them.  They would make great little birthday presents.  You could make them for a bridesmaid gift with jewelry in the bottom.  They would make great party decor centerpieces or party "gift bags."  Teacher gifts, christmas gifts, etc.
