I love adding texture to my paper craft creations and one of my very favorite ways to do that is with felt. Felt is warm and wonderful, comes in so many different hues and is so soft and dimensional. It’s also the perfect fabric for die-cutting as it doesn’t fray!
To create my custom embellishments I first started out with some embroidery floss and some 100% wool felt and paired them up with Maya Road Dies.
You can cut out your own shapes and stitch them but it’s fun and quick to use dies to cut the felt. I’ve used some dies from Maya Road…the Vintage Button Card Die and Flowers Die Set. Simply start by die-cutting the felt into pieces. I like to use a metal shim that is designed for die-cutting in the machine when cutting felt. It really gives you a nice clean cut.
Once the felt has been die-cut, the fun begins. I stitched these little embellishments together while watching tv with my mother-in-law who was here for a visit. It was so quick! Next time I’m going to die-cut a LOT at once so I can stitch away while I relax.
On the flower embellishment I layered the felt together and then accented the center with some orange embroidery floss and a simple straight stitch or running stitch. The same goes for the lines I stitched onto the button card die-cut. As you can see I didn’t worry too much about precision and I think the slightly uneven stitches adds to the whimsical homespun look.
Once the embellishments were done, I used a hot glue gun or liquid adhesive to keep them in place. This card uses some of the Simple Stories Domestic Bliss line. I’ve accented it with some stitched on vintage buttons, a Paper Flower and pink pin from Maya Road, and a sweet little tagged stamped with hello.
My second card also features a die-cut felt sentiment in a lovely orange felt.I’ve carefully adhered it with some Mono Liquid Adhesive to keep it in place. To further embellish this design I’ve added in some Maya Road Paper Leaves, a brad and some pretty twine.
Die-cuts are great ways to add interest and layers to your designs and can be used to cut so many different types of materials. Why not find time to get creative and try making your own die-cut and stitched embellishments?!
