Maya Road and Xyron Swap, Day 1

Hi Roadies and  welcome to the Maya Road and Xyron blog swap week!  I hope you'll join us for a fun filled week of projects and inspiration.  Okay, so I have one last Halloween project for you.  This project can be used as a door sign, in the center of a wreath or on an easel, which is how I will be using it.

As I work with lots of different types of materials, I love to try out different adhesives to see how they work. I used 3 of the Xyron adhesives on this project. The Permanent Adhesive Glue Stick to apply the paper to my chipboard pieces, paper mache cone and wood spools.  The Double Sided High Tack Tape for my trims and the High Tack Adhesive Dots were great for the pom poms and adding dimension to the chipboard star.

For this project, I knew I wanted to make a sign of some sort, so I decided to use the Mixed Half Circle Chipboard Banner Album as a starting point. To make the sign thicker I used the Xyron Glue Stick to layer 4 of the album pages together. After covering the pages with patterned paper, the glittered chipboard letters were added.

A basic doll head was made using some fabric, then features were added. To attach the head to the sign, a dowel was drilled into the center of the half circle pages, glued in place then the head was glued onto the other end.

A small paper mache cone was used to make the hat. Above you can see the pom poms made from Twine Cording and the Sparkle trim around the base of the hat.

A Satin Scallop Edge Bloom and some Tu-Tu Tulle were used around the neck of my monster and his arms were made out of some spools. The gloves were painted then glittered before some more Tu-Tu Tulle was added.

Ghoul Bus Treats

Hi Roadies!  With the kids back at school, I thought it would be a good opportunity to use a school bus album, I've had for a while. But since the whole "back to school" period has kind of passed and Halloween is just around the corner, I figured I'd turn this project into a "ghoul bus" for some treats instead!

I turned the album into a treat box, by adding some chipboard pieces, cut from an old chipboard album. For the back and front of the bus you can see that two pieces were cut. The solid pieces are to make the frame of the box and the die-cut pieces will be covered with paper, embellishments etc. and then glued to the box frame.

Here's how the frame of box got put together.

1. Use the longest line,  that you marked on the bus, to line up the "bottom" of  the box. Glue in place.
2. Next, glue the "back" of the bus in place. Allow these pieces to dry.
3. Glue the pieces from the previous steps, on to the other side of the bus.
4. Glue the front of the bus in place.
5. Use some foamcore to fill in the front area of the bus, as shown.
6. Then use some thin cardboard to curve around the engine area of the bus.
7. Use rubber bands or string to hold the cardboard in place, until it dries.
8. The frame of the bus should now look like this. 
9. Take the diecut "front" piece of the bus and cut it, to fit the bus frame.

The front of the bus was covered with patterned paper first. Then the die-cut pages from the School Bus Album and the die-cut pieces that were hand cut, were covered with paper and the die-cut areas were filled in, with paper and stickers, before gluing them to the frame.

For the headlights layered buttons were used and the grille was made out of a Wood Birdcage, that was painted and then glittered. I also used a little Twine Cording to trim the front and sides of the bus.

The chipboard wheels from the album and some circles from the Mixed Blossoms Chipboard Set were used on the wheels, along with some more Wood Buttons and Star Trinket Pins.

A little chipboard banner was attached to some wire and then hot glued into place on the back of the bus.

I finished off the bus by adding some treats for my son's class. Happy Halloween!

Maya Road and Stampendous Blog Swap Day 3

Hey there, Roadies! Mandy Kay Starner here, to share a fun fall card, I created using Maya Road and Stampendous products.

When I received my Stampendous Fran-tage Mica set in the mail I thought long and hard about how I could use the mica in an "out of the box" kind of way. Ironically, I ended up putting my mica in a box... a shaker box!

The rich metallic colors of the mica made me think of fall and the leaves falling, so I took a couple of the Ornate Tags Chipboard pieces and a scrap piece of acetate from some stamp packaging to create a fun shaker box for my fall card.

To create my shaker box, I covered one full Ornate tag(frame and the middle) with some patterned paper. Then, I painted just the frame of an identical tag, glued a piece of acetate behind it, and adhered it to the paper covered tag(but not before sandwiching in some of the mica).

I covered my card base with Patterned paper and layered on some Sunset Burlap Trim, Cream Ruffle Edge Trim, some leaves from the Autumn Mini Chipboard set, and some Vintage Paper Roses.

And I topped it all off with a stamped sentiment, using the Varsity Uppercase Alphabet stamps.

Its almost autumn!!

Hey Roadies! Its Mandy Kay Starner here, to share a sweet little project with you to get your home ready for Autumn.

I am one of those people who just LOVE autumn. Honestly, I can't get enough. The moment winter hits I am already dreaming about the next fall... the leaves turning, the smell of cool rain and burning wood in the air... I could go on and on, but I will spare you. :) Since its *almost* autumn, I am already planning and making my decorations. I have  a small hoarde of tiny wreaths and I thought making one of them into an owl would be fun. So without further ado, here she is...

I started with a little 8" grape vine wreath and layered up some Cream colored Satin Scalloped Edged Blooms,  some Vintage Burlap Roses in Sunset and Barn, some Felt Pearl Blossoms, some Fabric Leaves, and a Vintage Edge Mum. For her eyes, I started with some Flower Bottle Caps, I inked them up with a black ink pad, punched some Kraft doilies to fit inside, and I added some Wood buttons, and some Velvet Resin Blossoms to the centers. For her beak I painted a large heart from the Shot Through The Heart chipboard set. To top it all off, I added a sweet little Vintage Pearl Butterfly pin to the flowers and a bow made from the Canary Paper Twine Cording.

And now, I'm one step closer to autumn. Would it be crazy to start decorating now? :)

Things that go bump in the night!

Hello Roadies!

I don't know about you, but next week has one of my most FAVORITE holidays of the year!  In exactly 6 days from now, I will be shoveling candy into my mouth like there's no tomorrow.  Oh who am I kidding?  I pretty much started doing that the second they put the Halloween candy on the shelves! 

Anyway!  When I saw that Maya Road had come out with the most adorable set of fall-inspired chipboard, I couldn't wait to play.   Be sure to check out the Autumn Mini Chipboard set and you will see exactly what I mean!  Plenty of cute chipboard images to use...I need to get crackin' on the pumpkins!

So I made a spooooky Halloween card to celebrate, and I'll actually be giving this away as a birthday card.  Goodness!  Wouldn't you love to have your birthday near Halloween?  More candy please!

Do you use chipboard on your cards much?  I really love adding all that extra dimension...and don't be afraid to layer chipboard on chipboard, like I did here!  Here I used the cat from the Autumn Mini Chipboard over the window frame from the Windows Chipboard set.... all on top of the perfect accent piece, a Kraft Journaling Tag!  I also pulled out one of the new colors of Zipper Trim in Pumpkin Orange....perfect for my card and the fall season!  And you would think with all of these dimensions and layers, this would require a special envelope to mail, but it doesn't!  It's still a very thin card and can be mailed by regular post.  So don't forget to give your cards some Maya Road treatment!

Silly Monster's Welcome!

Hi Roadies!  I have wanted to try covering my chipboard pieces with felt for some time now.  In this project I took it one step further and filled the felt covered chipboard with batting, for a  3D look?  Here's what I ended up with, a silly monster sign to welcome all the "Trick or Treaters" who come to our door! :)

 

Here's a sample piece of chipboard being covered with felt then filled with the batting.

1. Start by cutting your felt slightly larger than your chipboard piece. Cut small slits all the way around the felt. Apply glue around the edge of the chipboard (Leave about an inch free of glue so you can add the batting.) Adhere the edges of the felt to the chipboard.
2. Flip the chipboard over and begin adding small pieces of batting into the opening. Use a file or pencil to help push the batting into all of the corners of your piece.
3. Close up the opening of your piece with glue.

Below you can see how the top section of the monster's head was created using the same method in the sample.   Since only lower section of the page will be seen on this project, only that section was covered with felt and filled with batting.  I added a chipboard petal for a tooth then glued the two pieces together.

 

 The nose was also done the same way as the sample. To make the sign I pieced two long chipboard pages together then covered them with patterned paper.
